Teddy Bear Rats

Pet Rattery located in Spring Branch 78070 with service areas to include, San Antonio, Austin, Waco, Waxahachi, Dallas, Fort Worth.

About Us

Teddy Bear Rats is inspired by our favorite childhood teddy bears. Soft, fluffy, and go everywhere with us. Teddy bears are our friends whom we share happy moments with, share secrets with, cry with, laugh with, and hug when we are anxious.

We have a passion for pets and breed seeking temperament, health, color and conformation in every pet we produce. In our endeavors to produce and standardize our most ideal pets, we spare no time or expense in keeping our pets as pets first and breeders and placements second.

While we do not in particularly breed rats to sell them, we do breed them with intent and for non-food purposes. We do not rely on adoptions as a means of funding our Rattery or ourselves.

We are located just north of San Antonio, in Spring Branch, and deliver our ratties to their new homes in the San Antonio, Austin, Waco/Waxahachi, Dallas and Fort-Worth metroplex when we do a route trip from San Antonio to Dallas. We will occasionally have transport to Houston about every quarter, so Houston Locals would likely be waitlisted and advised when available.

Thank you for checking out our rattery and we look forward to sharing the community with you!

Adopting Your New Pet Rats

TEDDY BEAR RATS

Our adoption process starts with an application to our waitlist. Pet rats from ethical breeders are in high demand and we breed toward specific goals related to improvements we wish to see, not towards any adoption goals. Due to this, we don’t always have pets available, or enough at a time to adopt to all on our wait list at one time.

Applications are to help us ensure that our pets go to homes that pose the least risk of rehoming later and their health and prosperity. We review applications when we have rats available and reach out when rats become available to those next on the waitlist. Please message our Facebook Page if you would like to check the status of your application.

We do offer delivery from San Antonio to Burlesson on specific trip dates. Our next planned trip to Dallas is April 19th. We meet at Pet Stores along the route. For our local adopting families, our home is open by appointment to those who do not currently own rats and offer delivery or meet-ups within 20 miles of 78070.

Our rats, currently, are all priced at $65 - $80 each and will raise to $80 each in the new year. Our prices do not put us into a “profit” business and it does help to cover our costs for lab grade and irradiated products, enrichments, enclosure maintenance and upgrades, trips to Dallas, TX and deliveries, and our Welcome Kit that we send home with all our critters. We know that for some, it puts our rats out of the budget, but we are more than happy to refer you to local rescues and other local breeders we trust.

Frequently Asked Questions

  • Housing:

Our critters are all pets first. As such, we care immensely about their well being and housing set ups. We keep Midwest Critter Nations and recommend this cage to everyone.

We have 12 Critter Nations; 9 are fully decked out and customized with 12” deep steel trays and 3 with wood siding instead. We have built small shelves and added large bird toys in which both the rats love to climb and swing and chew on.

We do not have any rodent racks. We do occasionally use temporary bins for our adults and did acquire some 110 quart to 50 gallon size plastic temporary housing in which we may use on occasion. We will utilize the correct housing that works best for each individual rat.

We intend to house no more than 4 adult ratties per critter nation and nomore than 6-8 juvenile ratties per criter nation depending on their size.

  • We exclusively use PicoLab 5053 Irradiated Rodent Blocks, PJ Murphy Fine Sani-Chips, BioFresh Performance 1/8th Pellets and BioFresh Comfort Bedding.

We primarily use and recommend the PetSmart Full Cheeks Small Pet Flat Back Water Bottles & Ware Hay Racks for lab block feeding. We do have many custom items as well that we use.

  • Yes, ‘round here we call it the Rat Tax. You can’t possibly come to our cages and have our rats NOT expect a treat from you.

We love to use our blend of over 110 products all dumped into a single large container and use it until it’s gone. This includes grains, pastas, baby treats, chicken treats, bird seeds, nuts, seeds, granolas, cereals, dried fish and bugs, dried fruits, and more. We really leave nothing good out. It is not a balanced Shunamite Diet and is used as a treat. We love to scatter this through the cage or use it every time we see them. We do offer this for sell, just ask. It costs us about 1.20 per ounce to make so it isn’t quite cheap but it does go a long ways.

We also love to purchase shrimp, crab, chicken hearts, dog treats, dog bones, yogurt, and Vita Paste. Seriously, if we see it in a store, we’re getting it after guilt tripping ourselves into it after thinking about the tooks on our rats faces if they hear the grocery bags and no treats follow.

We can’t recommend dog bones/treats enough as great bordom busters and enrichment, specially for conscious budget folks.

  • We are members of the AFRMA as TEDY but do not register each pet we produce.

  • We always wanted to show our rats, but feel that the transport of them out of sate and the health risks involved is greater than our desire to show. We do want to participate in virtual shows.

  • Safety is the number one priority for our household, and our beloved pets.

We try not to adopt to families with health risks as precaution and will always advocate for you to speak with a health care provider regarding concerns and after adoption to always mention to your healthcare provider that you have pet rats at home.

We practice yearly testing for antibodies for HANT, LCMV, SEND, SDAV, PCAR, CarB, ECUN, MPUL, KRV, IDIR regardless if new additions are not brought into the program, adoption, or returned adoptions. We are RBF Rat Bite Fever POSITIVE.

Our health testing results always available here on our website.

  • We gurantee that you will receive a healthy, unpregnated, and sane pet.

If for any reason you are unsatisfied with the selection of your pet rat, you may return it with no questions asked or judgements passed. In some cases you may exchange the animal for another of the same ‘value’. Refunds are not provided upon return, only exchanges.

Refunds are only provided if the guarantee has not been met. Animals must be returned for refunds.

We reserve the right to deny service to anyone for any reason.

At this time, we give information as we know it to the new owner. A lot of our lines are new and because of this, we can not guarantee personality type, long term health, or other and we make this known to any person interested in adopting.

No pets may be re-sold or re-homed by the adoptive family without first receiving a rejection from us to “adopt back” our pets.

  • We want to ensure that all adoptions are impulse free, properly vetted, and are mainly in the best interest of the animals we produce, without prejudice.

Next step would be to be placed on the waitlist in which you are allowed to formally claim one of our rats as a pet.

Pick ups may be arranged between the 6 and 8 week mark. Some rats are 8 - 12 weeks when placed up for adoption and have no waiting period to claim.

Our adoptions for adults are $30-$65 and babies $65-$80 on average (per 🐀). Full payment is due to hold or reserve any 🐀 and 1/2 is refundable should you decide for any reason to back out of adoption or return the 🐀 within 14 days. All fees are fully refundable should our rats not meet our guarantees of being sane, sound, not pregnant and correctly sexed at the time of pickup/drop off and 72 hours thereafter. If we identify stress sniffles within the first 24 hours, our soundness guarantee will extend to 14 days when no other pet rats are present in the home.

We require all 🐀 back for any refunds and our agreement does not allow the resale or rehoming of any 🐀 in their lifetime, unless explicitly directed to do so (they come back to us).

  • At this time, no.

We do not have any lines that have met their intended end goal. We are also working a lot with newer lines.

In future, should we have stock that we feel could do well for particular breeding goals of others, we would consider it.

  • No, while we would love to aid rescue in other ways, we do not accept rescue rats.

This is due to our closed rattery and to avoid unneccesary risk to our highly valued rat family. We practice riggourous testing and sanitation so we can have the healthiest animals and pets.

We leave it to experienced rescues with the proper veterinary aid, knowledgeable staff, and set up for rescue situations.

We will never turn away one of our own rats and will always accept them back home.
